Ayvalik
Sarmisak
Stone
Masonry
Ayvalik is a charming town on the Aegean coast, located about 120
km north of Izmir. A stroll through the narrow roads of the town will
charm the visitor with many fine examples of old style masonry using
the local reddish "Sarmisak stone." Here is one of many
examples of elaborate carvings on a Sarmisak stone balcony support.
Here are some views that emphasize various aspects of Ayvalik. (Photographs, A. Cemal Ekin) |

Color
Sunset turns the blue waters to a wonderfully playful canvas of
color. As you enjoy the rich selections from the kitchen of your
favorite restaurant, the sunset creates a different view every day.
Depending on the time of the day, the season, and where you are,
you will see many scenes that may look similar but every sunset
is different in Ayvalik. |

If you have not yet tried it and you are

A stroll on Alibey Island will likely pass by the old Stone Coffee
House. It is an old structure that reflect the architecture and masonry
that unmistakably identifies Ayvalik. If you are near the old structure,
make sure to swing by and see its rear view as well. |

Taxiyarhis Church
Cunda
 |
 |
 |
One of the must-see places in Ayvalik is on Alibey
Island. Taksiyarhis Church has long been abondoned as a church but
it stands with quiet dignity. The grounds keeper allows you to go
inside and see the old structure which looks in worse condition from
there. The colums are cracked, the frescoes are either faded or scraped
or both, most of the stucco crumbled, but Taksiyarhis is determined
to stand. |
